The Velsen adventure Mine brings underground history to life

The old Velsen coal mine has a training gallery. Miners learned to work there a long time ago. Now visitors can go there. You can see real mining technology. You can feel what a real mine is like. The gallery still works today. It is the only one like this in Germany.

Velsen is a district in Saarbrücken. It is in the west. Velsen has a special mine. It is called the Velsen Adventure Mine. The mine was a training mine. It closed in 2011 - . A group called Erlebnisbergwerk Velsen e.V. took over the mine. They opened it again for visitors.

The adventure mine is special. It is not just a museum. You can see how mining works. You can see machines that still work. The mine has 800 meters of tunnels on 3 levels. The machines are still working. You can see conveyor belts, loading machines and drilling equipment. Everything works like it did when miners worked here. The machines use water power, air power or electricity.

Special things to see are an original deep shaft with a rope system. There is a conveyor belt for people. The last working air-powered lift system in Germany is here. Above ground there are battery-powered trains and carriages. They take you on a mining tour.

The mine is protected. It became protected in 2019. Tours last 90 minutes. You learn about miners' work. It is real. It is exciting. It is more interesting than other places.

This mine is not just about mining. You experience real mining here.
